A Plan for the Planet

This website is about how we might peacefully upgrade our democratic institutions to get humanity out of the mass grave it is currently digging for itself.

It is about how to create a “Consocracy;” a peaceful, democratic, socially just, economically sound, and environmentally sustainable way for humanity to fix the serious mess it is in.

It is based on the use of consensus in all public decisions to ensure the interests of everyone being governed, not just those in the majority, are equitably considered.

The Oxford dictionary defines democracy as “government by the whole population”. In reality, however, democracies are not by “the whole population”. They never have been. The “One man, one vote” catchphrase often repeated by those “democratically” elected to govern us, is actually a mistaken description of democracy that hides an unfortunate truth.

Even with the best of intention, all democracies today only require 51 percent of those involved in any public decision to decide the fate of the other 49 percent. Within every democracy today is the unquestioned assumption that those in the majority will provide for the needs of those in the minority, which is simply not true.

Ask any Native American, New Zealand Maori or Australian Aborigine if they think the democracies they live under treat them equally. Every statistic on their poverty, health, education, housing or incarceration levels, when compared with the majority, proves beyond any doubt they are not.

This serious flaw of majority vote democratic decision-making was actually foreseen 250 years ago by Madison, Jefferson, Mill and others when they framed the US Constitution.

Unfortunately, they never resolved the problem. They just hoped that a well-educated citizenry would overcome this failing.

Regrettably, it hasn’t. Instead the serious hidden flaw of democratic decision-making has created a large disengaged population and the emergence of rich, narcissistic, corporate owned politicians to govern us.

The author of this website does not believe the solution to democracies’ hidden flaw lies in introducing yet another new political theory, vague philosophy, religious text or Narcissist power game. He believes it lies in extracting already tried and tested political governance ideas from around the world to create a detailed comprehensive plan for managing our planet. It lies in gradually, voluntarily, peacefully introducing a non-political, “structured” variation of consensus decision-making into our existing democratic institutions.

Not only would this heal democracy’s serious hidden flaw, it would:

  • Enable many autonomous communities to live in the same area together peacefully, …e.g. Muslims, Christians and Jews all living together in the Middle East, each in full control of their own lives and cultural assets,
  • Remove power and the use or threat of force to resolve inter-community differences,
  • Ensure minorities are involved in all political decisions,
  • Ensure there is gender equality in all political decisions,
  • Ensure social justice, environmental sustainability and economic rationality are always considered simultaneously when making any political decision,
  • Ensure political representatives are personally known to those who select them,
  • Ensure narcissists cannot buy their own selection as political representatives,
  • Avoid election cycles which force short term solutions to long term problems,
  • Remove social media manipulation and fake news from political decisions, and
  • Reduce the cost of government by ensuring the rapid, peaceful implementation of all political decisions.

Today, no democracy does even one of these things.

Using consensus in democratic decision-making is something not many governments have ever attempted because it doesn’t work in large groups and it can be easily hijacked by narcissists to satisfy their own egos.

On this website, the author of “A PLAN FOR THE PLANET” book series briefly explains how a consensus based “Consocracy” might be set up despite these current failings. It is based on his 50 years of professional planning experience working on the edges of political decision-making all over the world.

Admittedly, it will be no easy task to perfect, much less implement a form of democracy that uses consensus in its decision-making. Commercialized algorithms on the internet are increasingly polarizing whole populations. Narcissistic world leaders are blatantly lying to the public about their ambitions, Global populations are rising, natural resources are dwindling, seas are warming, global pandemics continue and money has become the planet’s new God.

Most depressing, almost no one has any idea what the “BIG PICTURE” solution to these failings might actually look like.

Thankfully, however, there are a growing number of people seeking answers to these problems like Ed Miliband, Rutger Breaman, David Wengrow and Ted Rau. Some of the older seekers of the BIG PICTURE, like Noam Chomsky, John Buck, Sharon Villines, Edwin John, and the author of this website, have been working on them for most of the last half century.
